Okay, I've decided to go with the Canon Rebel XTi. When comparing prices and features between it and, say, the 30D, I decided this one suits my needs. And with all of your generous donations, I can almost afford it!
I am hoping to have enough by Friday or Saturday, so that I can bring my baby home.
I'm already picking out names for him.
Wanna help me get him? If you do, I'll send you a 5x7 print of my choosing... :)
"for seven months, he will visit the seven continents, sail the seven seas, and visit the seven ancient wonders of the world. Using a wiki, noneck will harness the collective knowledge of the globe, and report weekly on seven topics of freedom. Before he leaves, he is fundraising US$11.11 from 700 global residents."
Help a guy out!
Maybe he'll run into my parents, who are currently sailing around the world.
Man alive. I had to be in Hoboken by 7:30am. It was feakin' cold. I bought a coffee for my walk to the space. It helped all of me except the hand that wasn't holding it, which felt about to fall off.
Matt Semel asked me to be the still photographer at the filming of a spec commercial for his company.
It was lots of fun, but apparently top secret (shhhh!), so I can't post photos yet. But once he gives the nod, I will not only post photos, but a link to the spot, so everyone can enjoy it. And believe me, you will! It is energetic and creative and colorful and fun!
I also got to borrow a Canon 20D. I love it. It felt really good in my hands and within an hour, my old camera felt foreign. But I'm not as good with the SLR yet. I need practice. Lots of practice!
Meanwhile, I did a couple fauxtobooth sessions with Matt and one of the actors, Adam. Aren't they cuties? (The correct answer is "yes".)
It's 5:30am. I'm off to a photog job in Hoboken. I get to borrow an SLR for the shoot. Yay!
Also, it'll put a little more change into my camera fund.
Matt hired me for this one. He met Bre at a party one night. The following night he ran into us on the subway in Brooklyn, just as we were about to cause some rasterbation mischief. He pitched in. (Thanks!)
Hey still broken and still collecting donations...
People have been amazing! thanks to Peter for giving me hilarymchone.com and hosting and everyone else for donations and all sorts of ideas of how to get out there and get more money. So much support - I'm overwhelmed!! :)
chipin.com seems to be having trouble. But I have paypal too (hiraly), so if you wanna make a donation that way, it would be rad! (I say as if I was my friend Shawna from Cali.)
Okay, so I mentioned before that when Bre, Charles, and I were wheatpasting this photo
at 11 Spring Street, a man asked me if this was a picture of Ann Frank. When I told him it was me, he asked if he could use my face on t-shirts. He said they'd be very popular in Hong Hong.
Well, yesterday Charles (most likely joking) told me I should sell them. Here they are. I don't really expect that they'll sell, but who knows? In any case, I now have a Cafe Press store and will be adding more items soon... :)
Yup. Twice in 8 days. And there may be another one on Sunday. I'm a rockstar!!
But I can't continue much farther without better equipment.
I'm a picture taker. I can't NOT take photos. I do it every day. It gives me more pleasure than any other activity.
This is my camera. The very one that has taken the photos recently published in the New York Times.
It's broken. And, although sweet and fun, it's not professional.
So far, all of my jobs have come through word-of-mouth. It has been great, but I've been hesitant to put myself really out there because I have limitations with my little Canon and people don't immediately take me seriously when they see it.
I need a camera, but don't currently have the $ to do it. I am trying to raise the money. I have a goal of $2500, which would get me quite a nice set-up. But I won't lie: I'll get that Canon 5D if it's within my reach. (I just talked to a guy who has one just sitting there, unused. Grrrrrrr. Mine would be used every day forever.)
There are lots of ways you could help me...
You can: 1. Donate money through chipin.com.
Anyone who donates will get a 5x7 limited edition print (of my choice), when you send your name and address to: mchone [at] gmail [dot] com
So far I have $236.11. AWESOME!!
2. Buy my photography.
3. Hire me.
4. Send people to me.
5. Provide equipment - any cameras/lenses/flashes/memory cards/etc. that you may have sitting around. Or new. I wouldn't complain.
6. Provide services, like printing or framing, which I could use in selling items.
7. Give me a show.
8. Buy my time as a gift for someone.
9. Buy practically anything in my apartment. (Skis, anyone? I don't really need a bicycle or a sofa or a TV or The Simpsons on DVD.)
10. Anything else you can think of.
Ideally, I'll have a new camera within a week.
Contact me through Flickr mail or at mchone [at] gmail [dot] com!
Bre and I had so much fun with our first rasterbation project that we decided to get out and do it all over again.
On Saturday we brought a couple PDFs to Kinko's. It was $.49/page to print it ourselves or $.10 to have them do it. We had a lot of pages. We let them do it.
Sweet Glenys was at the counter. She was a little under the weather. She told us it would be 24 hours before we could pick the things. Errr?
Bre came up with a plan.
"Well, we'll be in the area for a couple hours. Is there anything we can pick up for you? Maybe some tea?" Glenys, not understanding our attempt at bribery, but still in the mood for Starbucks, said she'd like some milk. "Steamed?" Yes. "Vanilla?" Yes.
She then started another sentence with "So when you pick these up tomorrow..."
Sigh.
We still gave it a shot, but to no avail.
So we bought a new toner for my laser printer, picked out some more photos, and did some work at home - the photos we posted at 11 Spring Street.
Anyway! We did eventually make it back to Kinko's to pick these up. Originally they were two and, although we wanted them to be interacting, we planned on them being separate from each other. Once laid out on the floor of my apartment, however, it was clear that they should be put together as if they were one image.
We brought it to the Prospect Park Bandhell in Brooklyn in the middle of the night. Gained access by climbing over a fence. Apparently there are no police in the park late night/early morning. Hmmmm.
Taped it up. Had a photo shoot...
See the rest of my photos here. Check out Bre's photos here. Rasterbate something on your own here.
Bre heads back to his Seattle home today. I've had a blast hanging out with him and collaborating on these projects. Hopefully we will cause some mischief together again soon.
A guy came up and said we could sit on it if we want. If I remember correctly, it's going to be used in a theater production of Point Break. Keanu Reeves' character will be a volunteer from the audience using cards.
That sounds about right.
Michael's a cool guy. I've worked with him before and hope to again soon...
Okay, I've managed to do a lot with my sweet little camera, but now I'm getting more photography jobs and, you know, getting published in the New York Times and shit.
It's time for an SLR, but I don't currently have the funds. I'm working out how to raise the money and will have some of my work available for purchase.
Stay tuned for more info (and contact me if you are interested in something in particular)!
Tonight, Bre and I completed one of the latest Cult challenges...rasterbation! We printed larger than life pics of ourselves and posted them in public places. Mine went up in a Brooklyn subway station and on the cube at Astor Place.
Bre's was at the end of a subway car.
We then took both printouts and wheatpasted them to the wall at 11 Spring Street.
In New York? Go check it out, take photos, and send 'em my way - mchone@gmail.com! Or, even better, upload 'em to Flickr and contact me, Brooklyn Hilary. :)
Okay, so I've had a bunch of photos used in the past week. They're all from a play I shot. The most significant and exciting event was that one was used online and in print in the NY Times. A nice place to start off, eh? (I keep saying that and it never gets old for me.) Link to story.
Me with the paper:

Someone told me I needed a blog. I do what I'm told.
For example, I recently joined a cult. It's for exteme self-portraitists... In order to be initiated, I had to take a photo of myself dying. This is how I chose to die:
Other things I've had to do are:
1. Look HOTT
2. Don't touch the ground
3. Be in a tree
4. Break a law (here I am trespassing with cult leader Bre Pettis)
5. Crush a stranger's head
6. Show fists
Lots more to come. The plan is to showcase some in Bre's Seattle gallery in early March... Fun fun fun!
