More, please.

I'm writing this with the assumption that it will be my last post of 2007. It's also my 371st post of 2007. If I had set out to average a post per day for the entire year, I'm not sure I could have done it.

Somehow, a blog feels so much easier than a written journal, though. I can post a photo or a couple sentences and be done with it. And when I look at it, all the stuff that's NOT written comes back to me.

Lomo Stars

So. 2007. It was my favorite year so far!

I just started listing highlights and lessons, but changed my mind. The gist is this:

I pretty much did whatever I wanted to do. And it paid off.

But hopefully it will pay off more next year, if you know what I mean. ;)

Tonight I'm gonna see some friends.

Tomorrow is 2008.

More, please.

Vintage Train

Matt told me about the vintage trains a couple weeks ago. This afternoon he suggested we run into the city to see if we could catch it...

Matt & Hilary

What I read online: Every Sunday throughout December, the MTA has operated six-car trains from the 1930s & 1940s on the V line, running from Queens Plaza to Second Avenue in Manhattan. The old cars are usually stored at the New York City Transit Museum in Brooklyn Heights.

Matt and I were lucky - we caught the train at Broadway and Lafayette and were on the last ride to Queens and back.

Here is the conductor... I almost got left on the platform because I was busy taking this photo.
Conductor

What did I learn today?

The vintage train is not a place for me to meet men. Don't get me wrong...there were PLENTY of men. But I got the feeling that their interest in the trains was greater than their interest in women. ;)

AND

84 out of 100 women prefer men who wear hats. (My dad must have seen this at some point...)

Bet you do better in a hat...

If you haven't done it, put it on your calendar for next year... :)

Matt got some great photos! His camera took them vintage-style! ;) See them all here.

And the rest of my photos are here.

Energy, or lack thereof.

For whatever reason, I've spent the last three days devoid of energy.

Today I decided to go walk around the park, as exercise generally does the body good. (Kinda like milk. Pass it on!)

So I walked the 3-mile loop.

3 mile

It was a super-gorgeous day and I'm glad I saw some of it.

But I still just wanna lay around in bed!

As long as I'm awake to ring in the new year....

Juno

Lillian and I went to BAM to see Juno (NOT like the city in Alaska) tonight.

I highly recommend it.

We then had dinner/drinks at Black Sheep Pub. I had a beer battered chicken sandwich with salad.

I highly recommend it.

Then I came home and took a bath.

Now I'm going to sleep.

Christmas!

I came up to Boston Sunday night. My dad's side of the family met up at my aunt's house there.

There was the idea that we would "re-gift" this year. OR give gifts that we made. I had a plan of ordering photos for everyone, but instead I gathered up all the prints I had around the house, put them in a big envelope and passed it around for people to pick and choose and fight over. (I don't think there was any fighting.)

A couple self-portraits, but mostly Park Slope photos.

It was fun! I got a couple neat hats knit my my aunts. This one was given to me by Nancy:
Me in my new hat...

My cousin Ian has worked at lots of restaurants and is a great cook... He gave us all a book of recipes that he put together. Lots of great stuff in there - can't wait to try some out!

My 3 year-old nephew, Antonio, picked presents for everyone from a dollar store. I got a plate! :) Here I am with him and my niece (Sara) and other nephew (Nico). :)
Hilary, Mica, Nico, Antonio, Sara

The way coolest re-gift, though, was from my dad. He gave me a camera that once belonged to my great-grandfather. It's a Kodak panoramic that takes 120 film. And it's from 1894. I'm pretty sure it'll still work. Will try it out soon. A couple photos:
My "new" camera - Panoram-Kodak from 1894

Matt joined us too! The last time I brought a Jewish boy home for Christmas, my dad gave him a bottle of Manischewitz (I just looked up the spelling of that). The funny part, though, was that he signed it from the McCohens.

He managed to make us laugh with his gift to Matt too... He re-gifted a "used" sympathy card. Crossed out the message and wrote in his own. I guess that has nothing to do with Matt being Jewish. ;)

Now I'm at a cafe. Matt and his friend Marc are playing a game. I'm catching up on this kind of stuff. It was a very nice holiday in Boston, but I'm looking forward to being back home in Brooklyn tonight...

Happy Holidays, everyone!

Music and Video and Stuff

This video was featured on Gothamist today. I want to hate this song, but I don't. It makes me happy. And it reminds me of About A Boy, which I love.

Davey Dance Blog -38- ROCKEFELLER CENTER - Mariah Carey - "All I Want for Xmas is You" from Pheasant Plucker on Vimeo.

AND back by popular demand (and by popular I mean Matthew), another free-association iPod Shuffle list. I made it on my way to my friend Patti's holiday party last night...

1. London Calling - The Clash
  • 24 Hour Adventure with Lillian - in Jill's car.  Video here.
  • Summer studying in London in 1995.  Vacation in London with Jen in 1993 (which reminds me of Twix and a drive to Brighton and Red, Red Wine for reasons I won't get into.)  Bicycling through Great Britain in...1985?  I was like...12.  And it rained 3.5 of the 5 weeks we were biking.
  • John Cusack
2. Lightning Frightning - David Bowie
  • Matt and his love of thunderstorms.  And bears.
  • The worst plane ride I've ever been on - a tiny plane to Burlington, Vermont.  Caught in a thunderstorm.  Had to circle.  People were getting sick throughout the plane.  I saw lightning NEXT TO my window.
3. The Midnight Bell - Jesse Harris
  • A huge several-year crush on Jesse.  Lots of opportunities to talk to him through mutual friends.  But avoiding him because I could never think of anything to say. (Me?!)  He gave me a CD when I first met him.  I didn't listen to it for months.  Then, I didn't stop listening to it for months.  Oh.  And I was at his Living Room show (the old Living Room) the night after he won his Grammy.  That was pretty sweet.
4. Dreaming with My Eyes Open - Clay Walker
  • Soundtrack of The Thing Called Love, a movie I can still watch over and over again.  (I secretly want to move to Nashville and become a country star.)
  • Speaking of Nashville Stars... I may be the only woman in NYC who was obsessed with that show.  The obsession only lasted one full season.  But, still.
  • Also the dreaming part of the title.  I've been having lots of dreams lately about making out with people.  Lots of people.  People I know.  People I don't know.  Famous people.  Men.  Women.  Apparently, anything goes.
5. The Blob - The Five Blobs
  • Loser's Lounge: Burt Bacharach, where B performed Me Japanese Boy as Tony Clifton, Jr.  The show was fantastic.  After the show, though, was one of my biggest fights with anyone ever.  It was godawful.
  • Hey!  I've never seen The Blob!
  • The sounds in it remind me of this:

  • And when I went to MySpace to find the link to the above video, Kevin's song "Baby Baby Baby" started playing automatically on my page. It's one of my favorites from 100 Songs in 100 Days. :) You can hear it on the 100 Songs MySpace page.

Hawk? Falcon? Either, way...on Gothamist. :)

I was walking to a meeting today and saw this hawk? falcon? on 4th Street near 6th Avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

    Hawk (Hawk? Falcon?)

A woman was on the phone talking to authorities of some sort. She said the bird hadn't moved for 10 minutes. It was just standing there, blinking.

I thought to myself... Pics of this would be great for Gothamist! A guy on the street said to me "Is that going to be in the news?" I replied "Maybe!"

Came home and submitted them. And whaddaya know? This one made the cut...

    :)

I'm gonna be on the radio.

Tomorrow (Friday, the 21st) I'm going to be on the Leonard Lopate Show - WNYC New York Public Radio.

    Friday, December 21 @ 12:40pm (sometime between 12:40 and 1:00pm, they say)

    Huh?

    :)

They had a recent photo project, which Kevin told me about - "Taking Things Seriously".

Below is my submission - I was going to blog it a couple days ago, but I wanted to add stuff! Oh, well...perhaps "stuff" will be added on the radio. ;)

    -------

    Scrapbook of 1991

For wnyc.org's Leonard Lopate Show Photo Project

This is a scrapbook I made half my life ago - at the age of 17, as a high school senior.

It was for my Women's Literature course, taught by my favorite high school teacher - Ms. Whaley. It's probably important to note that I was not a big fan of school. Although I got by, there weren't a lot of classes that I found myself all that interested in.

My mother and I were warned by other mothers/teachers that Ms. Whaley was extremely tough. Classmates complained that she was harsh and unfair. The moment I stepped in her classroom, though, I felt challenged and excited. She expected more of us than other teachers. And if we worked hard, we were rewarded.

This assignment was to collect and comment on articles and advertisements while considering women's rights/issues. The scrapbooks were due a couple months after we were given the assignment.

There was no Google in 1991. :)

I won't talk about everything in the scrapbook, but it included
    - articles on issues such as juggling career and family, abortion, birth control, rape, eating disorders, etc.
    - articles on women to look up to (athletes, business women, scientists, teachers, artists, activists, etc.)
    - advertisements (some portraying strong women, and many selling products to make us beautiful - like an Oil of Olay ad featuring a 15 year-old Jennifer Capriati because "You're never too young to start...")
    - a letter I wrote in response to an article entitled "Do girls prefer boys who treat them badly?" (This letter made me laugh out loud. I may have to blog it.)
    - comic strips and greeting cards*

So much stuff - a lot of it not much different from what you see in papers and magazines today.

This is what Ms. Whaley wrote...
"I think this is the best scrapbook I've received in 13 years of teaching this course! It's so complete, so intelligently commented on, so varied, so rich - and you obviously spent a lot of time. Your inclusion of articles from Soviet Life and the "Women's International Network News" is impressive. Thank you! What a pleasure to read and look at. I learned so much."

I've thrown out most of my school things, but this I continue to hang on to. It's like a little time capsule. And it makes me happy. And amused. And it reminds me that I was pretty much born a teeny tiny feminist.

Teeny Tiny Feminist Teeny Tiny Feminist...

    ----------

*I'm still surprised that I received this greeting card. It said "Catch a leprechaun and he'll grant your wish...but it's up to you to buy a bigger bra. Happy St. Patrick's Day!" And as if that wasn't enough, he added "I know you were hoping the leprechaun would give you the guy directly, but leprechauns are tricky." It's all kind of funny. And kind of appalling! :)

    iPod Shuffle

Once in a while, I throw my iPod on shuffle and see what happens.

Yesterday I did it on the subway on the way to casting. My thought was “I’ll just blog the list that comes up.” Then I hit the button. Then I decided to do a sort of free association as songs came up.

    1. Ballad of a Thin Man – Bob Dylan
    • Getting a tape of his music from my aunt before I was quite ready to appreciate it
    • Coming home from the Adirondacks with Matt, Miguel, and Alexis and listening to Bob Dylan’s radio show
    • Talking to Jessica about the Bob Dylan movie, which she warns me not to see under any circumstances
    2. Tired of Waiting for You – The Kinks
    • Receiving this CD from B as a gift in the early stages of our three-year stint.
    • Thinking about various perspectives/voices any given song can have (thanks, K).
    3. Mute Witness – Morrissey
    • Listening to the car radio in Rhode Island with my college boyfriend and his friends, hearing “You’re the one for me, fatty”, and thinking it was hilarious.
    • A group of high school friends who were into the Smiths and wearing black. I loved that group. But I wasn’t exactly right there with them. I kinda floated between groups.
    • Strangely, Morrissey also reminds me of a trip to Great Adventure with some girls I worked with at the NYU Book Centers in 1992. Which reminds me of a subway ride I once took – probably 5 years after I stopped working at NYU – when a boy stared at me for a while and then said “Did you work at NYU?" Yes. “You were always so nice to me!” (I had no recollection of this boy. But…you know…it was kinda my job to be nice to people.)
    4. All Things Must Pass – George Harrison
    • Loser's Lounge
    • Across the Universe (the movie) and how I thought it was pretty. But terrible. And how I kinda wanna see the current production of Cymballine (even though most of what I heard was negative) because it sounds pretty.
    5. Everybody's Talkin' - Sean Altman @ Loser's Lounge
    • Instant happy
    • Childhood trips to Cape Cod (skipping stones...)
I listened to 10 songs and wrote stuff down for 'em, but the first 5 already seem like a lot...

    The end!

    Fortune Cookie

I had Chinese food for lunch today.

    My fortune was this:

"A man's best possession is a sympathetic wife."

    (Euripides, no?)

I made this face last night, but I feel it applies...

    oh yeah...

    Cool stuff...

Hey, guess what? I have a lot of cool shit going on!

For instance, I'm producing (!) a workshop of Into the Hazzard - a contemporary take on Henry V, directed by Jessica Bauman. It'll be performed at the Tank on January 31 and February 1. (More info to come.)

Casting started today. I love the whole process...

Then I went to a theater-related holiday party thrown by New Georges. It was fun running into lots of people I've worked with in the past year.

Speaking of theater work in the last year... I went from stage manager to production manager to director to producer!! I feel like I'm playing a board game or something. It's so cool experiencing it from so many different perspectives. Next you'll see me on stage. (Okay, maybe not.) (But maybe.)

    ----

Yesterday was filled with good friends and good food... Started off with brunch at Miriam (mmm....Israeli breakfast and mimosas) with Eric.

    IMG_3610sm.jpg

Then I went to Lillian's NY directorial debut. She directed scenes from The Taming of the Shrew at the 78th Street Theatre Lab. Well done, Lil! After, a bunch of us hung out for a while. A patron of the arts bought us a couple rounds.

Lilly, Joshua, Katrina, Christopher, and Catherine:

And the night ended with dinner with Matt at Alchemy. We had beer and amazing burgers and he had the best brussel sprouts EVER.

    More fun, please. :)

    - I haven't been sleeping well (Jetlag + breakups will do that to a girl.)

    - 2008 will be better than 2007 (That's cool cuz 2007 was really, really great - like my favorite year ever.)

    - I will have children, but I can't until I meet my soul mate
Her: You know that, right? You can't have children until you meet your soul mate.
Me: Actually, I've been thinking maybe I can.
(Don't people do it all the time?)

    - There's a career change happening (This confused me. But...I'm always coming up with new stuff to do, so I guess it's possible. Hopefully it'll bring in a little more dough. ;) )

Oh! And I would benefit from some crystal work. (Wouldn't anyone? She didn't push it - she knew I wasn't gonna bite.)

Hmmm. Okay. (This is me being slightly negative.)

    ;)

Also... Lillian and I are trying to pay attention to signs.

    Any takers?

    Yester-me, yester-you, yesterday.

It's a Stevie Wonder sort of day.

    (copied and pasted lyrics)

What happened to the world we knew
When we would dream and scheme
    And while the time away
    Yester-me yester-you yesterday
Where did it go that yester-glow
    When we could feel
The wheel of life turn our way
    Yester-me yester-you yesterday
I had a dream so did you
Life was warm and love was true
Two kids who followed all the rules
    Yester-fools and now
    Now it seems those yester-dreams
    Were just a cruel
And foolish game we used to play
    Yester-me yester-you yesterday
When I recall what we had
I feel lost I feel sad with nothing but
The memory of yester-love and now
    Now it seems those yester-dreams
    Were just a cruel
And foolish game we had to play
    Yester-me yester-you yesterday
    Yester-me yester-you yesterday
    Sing with me
    Yester-me yester-you yesterday
    One more time.....

    Sundance Film Festival

I'm going to the Sundance Film Festival.

That is...if I can find a place to stay.

If you know of anything, gimme a shout!

    :)

    ----

Update: I think the boys and I have come up with a very creative solution. More to come, if we go with it...

Update: Well, Matt found something cheaper and easier than my grand scheme. So I'll just put that idea in my pocket for use at a later date. Now to come up with some crazy project for the trip... :) :)

    Flickr friend in the flesh...

Christoph (or vividBreeze) was one of my first contacts on Flickr - we've been commenting back and forth for over a year.

When he told me he'd be in NYC for a few days, I jumped at the chance to meet him! In fact, he was the inspiration for my Sunday brunch...

We had a very fun time - brunch, Coney Island, Columbus Circle. When it got to be past my bedtime (because of jetlag) and started getting rainy and cold, though, I ended up heading back home to my cozy bed in Brooklyn.

But I got lots of photos before we parted ways...

    Chris, looking dashing.

    Happy Holidays!

I hope the rest of your NYC trip was fantastic, Christoph! Perhaps I'll see you in Cologne one day...

    CommandShift3

Some people I know (like Lee Semel and Amit Gupta), along with some people I don't know, created a new website - CommandShift3.com

It's like Am I Hot or Not? except for web design. You go there, see images of two websites, pick your favorite of the two, and everything gets ranked. It's quick and fun.

If you click through enough sites, you'll eventually get to pick (or not pick) my photography site, which I think is kinda funny, as I didn't ask to be ranked... (At this moment it has won 64 of 107 battles - 60% - and is ranked #179 of 821 - down from earlier.)

    Check it out!

    Tis the season

I just got on a bus and couldn't locate my metrocard. I asked the driver if he'd take cash and he waved his hand and said "don't worry about it!"

    Err? Thanks!

    Brunch

Yesterday I had my brunch. 15 of us in my studio apartment!

This is Mark - you can tell by this photo how much fun we had. ;)
    Sunday Brunch

    Thank you to....

Eric for the mimosas. Yum. And it had been ages since I saw him - so great to catch up a little! (I've known him for, like, 29 years.)

Lillian for the guacamole! I make good guac, but hers kicked mine's ass. Yum!

Mark for playing DJ! I didn't have any time to think about music and he got it all set up for us. Awesome.

Kimi for keeping cups filled with her delicious bloody marys! (Such a HUGE help!) And for being so fun and awesome!

Matt & Miguel for bringing vodka for said bloody marys! (So many cute boys at this brunch!)

Lee for making coming all the way to Brooklyn in the morning even though he had another commitment in NJ in the afternoon!

Sam for taking over my camera for a while so I had some surprise photos to look at later!

Emily & Clint for the tasty dessert and for being such willing fauxtobooth participants! (And it was nice meeting Clint!)

Sara for the apple pie! (And for being ultra sweet and supportive!)

Adrian & Laura for not being afraid to take over the kitchen! And for providing a vegetarian egg dish after I was silly and added sausage to ALL of my mini-quiches.

And Chris for the delicious chocolate brought all the way from Germany! And for a fun outing after brunch...

I didn't take as many photos as I would have liked (and didn't manage to get pics of everyone), but...here are a few!

    Blog posts...

I just went back to see when I started my blog.

In the process, I noticed that I only have to post 11 more times to have posted 365 this year!

    Make that 10!

P.S. I just tested my brunch creations. I'm pleased.

    The Status of Friends

A woman I'm working with told me about a play she read that included online status messages of dozens of people. I decided to check out what all my Facebook contacts are claiming today. I, by the way, am currently "blogging all of your status messages".

Oh...my favorite status is in bold.

SB is proclaiming: I hear Frosty the Snowman - he's pretty kewl.
MB is waiting for his Mac to be repaired. No hard feelings, eh?
    BBB is really amazingly lucky.
RB is unable to import his Amazon blog here. Hmmm...
    RRC is cold.
AC is typing a status update on Facebook.
JC is twittering: Let the holiday party whirlwind begin.
MC is off for latkes and "It's a Wonderful Life" with friends!
PD is officially a grownup and it sucks.
